Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, most commonly affecting the big toe but also the ankles, knees, fingers, and elbows. A gout flare, also called a gout attack, produces sudden, intense pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in the affected joint, often severe enough to make walking or wearing a shoe unbearable. Gout typically develops when the body produces too much uric acid or cannot eliminate it efficiently, and risk factors include genetics, diet, alcohol use, obesity, and certain medications.

To be eligible for the acute gout flare clinical trial at Clinical Research of West Florida, participants must be age 18 or older, have a diagnosis of gout, and have experienced at least one gout flare in the last year. Final eligibility is confirmed through a screening visit with the study team at the Clearwater or Tampa facility.

Participants in the CRWF gout clinical trial may receive up to $3,300 in compensation for their time and travel for completed study participation. Study-related care is provided at no cost and no health insurance is required to participate.

An acute gout flare is a sudden episode of severe joint inflammation caused by uric acid crystals triggering the immune system. Flares typically begin at night and reach peak intensity within 12 to 24 hours, with symptoms including intense pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and reduced mobility in the affected joint. Without treatment, a flare can last anywhere from several days to two weeks. The CRWF gout clinical trial enrolls people who have experienced at least one acute flare in the past year.

Current gout clinical trials are exploring new investigational medications designed to reduce the pain and inflammation of acute gout flares, as well as therapies that target the underlying immune response driving the flare. Research is also ongoing into long-term uric acid-lowering therapies to prevent future attacks, though the current CRWF study focuses on acute flare management.
