Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin, causing rashes, lesions, and sores that are often triggered or worsened by sun exposure. The three main subtypes are chronic cutaneous lupus (including discoid lupus), subacute cutaneous lupus, and acute cutaneous lupus. Cutaneous lupus can occur on its own or alongside systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Symptoms commonly include red or purple skin patches, scaly disc-shaped rashes, hair loss, and photosensitivity.

To be eligible for the cutaneous lupus clinical trial at Clinical Research of West Florida, participants must be between ages 18 and 75 and have active cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Final eligibility is confirmed through a screening visit with the study team at either the Clearwater or Tampa facility.

Participants in the CRWF cutaneous lupus clinical trial may receive up to $1,800 in compensation for time and travel for completed study participation. Study-related care is provided at no cost and no health insurance is required to participate.

Cutaneous lupus clinical trials are research studies that test new investigational treatments, medications, and therapies for people with cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Many trials are double-blind and randomized, meaning neither participant nor researcher knows who is receiving the investigational treatment versus a placebo. This design reduces bias and helps results accurately reflect how the new treatment performs. Participants undergo a screening process to confirm eligibility, sign an informed consent form, and then begin scheduled visits with the study team.

Current cutaneous lupus clinical research explores biologic therapies targeting specific immune pathways, novel topical and oral medications, and immune-modulating agents designed to reduce skin inflammation and lesion severity. Researchers are studying whether these investigational treatments may reduce flare frequency, clear skin manifestations, and improve quality of life for people whose cutaneous lupus is not fully controlled by existing treatments.

Yes. The CRWF cutaneous lupus clinical trial is officially registered with the U.S. National Library of Medicine on ClinicalTrials.gov under study number NCT07332481. Participants can view full study details, eligibility criteria, and locations directly on the ClinicalTrials.gov website.

Potential benefits include access to investigational treatments not yet available to the public, personalized care and regular checkups with the study team, no insurance required, study-related care at no cost, compensation up to $1,800 for time and travel, and the opportunity to contribute to research that may advance future cutaneous lupus treatments for others living with the condition.

To enroll in the cutaneous lupus clinical trial in Tampa Bay, call Clinical Research of West Florida in Clearwater at 727-466-0078 or in Tampa at 813-870-1292, or complete the online eligibility form on this page. The study team will review your medical history, confirm eligibility based on age and active CLE diagnosis, and schedule a screening visit at the Clearwater facility (2147 NE Coachman Road) or the Tampa facility (605 N. Howard Ave.).
