What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is a long-term condition in which the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries stays too high. Blood pressure is written as two numbers — systolic (the top number) over diastolic (the bottom number). Under current American Heart Association guidelines, a reading of 130/80 mm Hg or higher is considered high.

High blood pressure is often called a “silent” condition because most people have no symptoms at all. Left uncontrolled over time, it can strain the heart and damage blood vessels, the kidneys, the eyes, and the brain. Hypertension is usually managed by a primary care physician or a cardiologist using prescription medication, diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

When blood pressure stays at or above 130/80 despite taking two or more prescription medications, it is often described as uncontrolled or resistant hypertension — and that is the group this clinical research study is designed for.

What Is High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, means the force of blood against your artery walls stays consistently too high. It is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, and it is a leading risk factor for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and reported as two numbers:

  • Systolic (top number) — pressure while the heart beats
  • Diastolic (bottom number) — pressure while the heart rests between beats

Most people with hypertension have no symptoms, which is why regular monitoring matters. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest discomfort or a pounding sensation in the chest, neck, or ears
  • Vision changes

Hypertension is typically managed with prescription medication combined with diet, exercise, weight management, reduced sodium, and limiting alcohol. For some people, blood pressure remains at or above 130/80 even while taking several medications. That is known as uncontrolled or resistant hypertension, and it is an active area of clinical research.

Important: never stop or change a prescribed blood pressure medication on your own. Talk with your doctor or the study team first.

More Detailed Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypertension clinical trials at CRWF are research studies that evaluate investigational treatments for high blood pressure. Participants are typically assigned at random to receive either the investigational study medication or a placebo, in a double-blind format, meaning neither the participant nor the research team knows which one a participant is receiving. This design allows researchers to measure the true effect of the study medication on blood pressure.

You may qualify if you are 18 to 70 years of age, have been diagnosed with hypertension, are currently taking 2 to 5 blood pressure medications, and your blood pressure is still at least 130/80 while on those medications. Full eligibility is confirmed during a screening visit at our Tampa research facility, where the study team will review your medical history, current medications, and blood pressure readings.

No. Do not stop or change any prescription on your own. Studies for uncontrolled hypertension are generally designed for people who stay on a stable regimen of their existing blood pressure medications, and the study doctor will review everything you take during screening. Any medication decisions are made with your study physician, and you should also keep your regular doctor informed.

There is no cost to participate. If you qualify, study-related visits, exams, and the study medication are provided at no charge, and no health insurance is required. Participation does not replace your relationship with your regular physician.

Compensation may be provided for your time and travel. The exact amount, along with how and when it is paid, is explained in detail during the informed consent process before you agree to enroll.

This hypertension study runs approximately 19 weeks and includes about eight office visits at our Tampa location. Visits typically involve blood pressure measurements, routine health checks, lab work, and a review of any symptoms or medications. Participation is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time.

Before anything else, you will review and sign an informed consent form that explains the study in plain language, including the potential risks and benefits. After that, the study team performs screening assessments, which may include blood pressure readings, a physical exam, an ECG, and lab tests, to confirm that the study is an appropriate fit for you.

Your Safety During The Study

Safety is the top priority throughout a hypertension clinical trial. Your blood pressure and overall health are monitored at every visit, the research team is available between visits to answer questions, and any side effects are documented and reviewed. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without affecting your regular medical care.
